MARY ROCHELLE BURNHAM - ARTIST INFO

As a four year old child who endured the loss of my younger brother, without much of a vocabulary to express my grief or the ability to comfort my parent's anguish, I embraced art to bring calm and order into my vision of the world. Creating art was always an intensely personal, emotional and solitary experience for me.  Intrigued by how light and color evoked mood, I found solace within those quiet places that resonated with deep meaning for me, whether it was a portrait, still life or landscape.

Although schooled in formal training, I nevertheless found my work came from my need to express myself, albeit, within the context of form, line, composition and color. People would ask me what my favorite medium was and I could not decide any more than a mother could choose among her children, I loved them equally for different reasons. I was intrigued by the lessons each medium presented and found that I grew as an artist by facing their challenges.

As the years have gone by, I realize that my work tells a story that is common to each of us. Aspects of life unfold; a loved one, a favorite place, a gift. I treat each one with care and thought to the preciousness and brevity of life's moments. I am grateful to be able to create what I love and share it with you.
